Government announces complete overhaul for automotive policy

KUALA LUMPUR: The National Automotive Policy (NAP) has been comprehensively overhauled to ensure a healthier automobile industry.

However, there was no indication if there would be any reduction in the price of cars.

Measures to be implemented under the revised NAP include:

> Termination of open approved permits (APs) from 2015.

> Prohibition of the import of used cars from 2015, and used automotive parts and components from June 2011.

> A policy for the scrapping of old vehicles, and mandatory roadworthiness inspections for vehicles aged 15 years or older before road tax renewal.

> Lifting of the freeze on manufacturing licences for passenger vehicles with engine capacity of 1,800cc and above, and priced not less than RM150,000.

> Incentives for local assembly and manufacture of hybrid and electric vehicles and their components.

> A new strategic partnership between Proton and a globally-established original equipment manufacturer (OEM).
